This week Americans saw firsthand the consequences of Kevin McCarthy’s Corrupt Bargain as House Republicans focused on everything but helping the American people. From promoting disgusting and racist lies about a former Biden assistant, to promising mainstream media fair investigations only to then go on Fox News and push absurd conspiracy theories about the Biden family that could easily be disproved with a simple Google search, House Republicans are solely focused on divisive attacks and partisan investigations to hurt President Biden.

And the American people have noticed, with new polling out this week showing Americans think House Republicans are already overreaching while, in stark contrast to Donald Trump, President Biden is acting responsibly as he works with investigators on the documents story.

There’s no doubt that Kevin McCarthy and his corrupt cabal in Congress have had a disastrous week. But don’t take our word for it. Look at the headlines:

Another Conspiracy Theory Bites the Dust…

Washington Post Laptop email suggests Hunter Biden read newspapers, not classified documents

Glenn Kessler – February 2, 2023

“This is a good example of how innuendo and suspicion can cause people to leap to conclusions without checking facts. Hunter Biden’s email has been described, but it has not been examined.

We’re fairly confident that Hunter Biden assembled this material by reading news reports and checking with contacts like Kaufman, rather than getting a special briefing from the State Department or others in the administration. … But for now, Cruz and Johnson earn Three Pinocchios. They have not presented evidence to dispute our conclusions.”

…While Comer Spreads More

Axios Comer’s two-step messaging war

Sophia Cai – January 30, 2023

“Comer’s two-pronged strategy for communication reflects the tightrope top Republicans are walking as they pursue promised investigations into the Biden administration and federal agencies with a tenuous House majority.

Recent polls indicate that independent voters are wary of Republicans’ plans for aggressive probes, an incentive for Comer to present himself in certain settings as a sober investigator.”

Huff Post Right-Wing Media, Top Republican Team Up To Push Racist Conspiracy Theory About Ex-Biden Aide

Matt Shuham – January 27, 2023

“But just a few days after taking a powerful new position and without any evidence to speak of, House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer (R-Ky.) is amplifying a wild conspiracy theory: that Joe Biden’s former executive assistant, Kathy Chung, is actually a foreign agent working for the Chinese Communist Party.

The hand-in-glove effort from top House Republicans and right-wing media has steered a comparatively banal classified document scandal into baseless, xenophobic fantasies.”

MSNBC Rep. Taylor Greene wrongly claims one school received $5.1B to teach CRT

February 2, 2023

“Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., falsely claimed during the House Oversight Committee’s first hearing of the new term that an Illinois elementary school received $5.1B to teach Critical Race Theory.”

Washington Examiner MTG compares Tyre Nichols and Ashli Babbitt, says rights of Capitol rioters ‘being violated heavily’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) compared the deaths of Tyre Nichols and Ashli Babbitt in a House Oversight Committee hearing Tuesday, saying the civil rights of people who entered the Capitol during the Jan. 6 riot “are being violated heavily.”

Republican’s Poll #s Going Down Like the Titanic

Washington Post Independent voters wary of investigations, want House GOP to deliver results

Paul Kane – January 28, 2023

“When asked to give a one-word response on how they feel about the state of the country, their responses were bleak: “Concerned.” “Scared.” “Upset.” “Disgusted.” “Depressed.” “Anxious.”

In all three groups, out of nearly 20 independent voters, just one used a positive phrase — “optimistic” — to describe their feelings, according to Navigator’s researchers.

But the focus groups found that these voters, while deeply displeased with Biden’s performance so far, are very skeptical about the Republican majority’s priorities.

That dovetails with new polling released Thursday from CNN, in which independents soundly rejected the early focus for House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) and his lieutenants: Just 24 percent agreed with the key priorities, while 76 percent were opposed.”

CBS News Public sees Biden cooperating with documents investigation; job approval remains unchanged — CBS News poll

Anthony Salvanto, Jennifer De Pinto, Fred Backus, Kabir Khanna – January 29, 2023

“While that majority think Mr. Biden is trying to cooperate with the Department of Justice, an equally large majority believe Donald Trump has not.”

Navigator More Americans Think Trump’s Handling of Classified Documents Was Worse Than Biden’s

January 31, 2023

“The strongest messages on Biden and Trump’s classified documents focus on Biden’s cooperation with law enforcement compared to Trump’s refusal to comply. Going after Republicans for their obsession with trying to score political points on the issue instead of doing their jobs and being hypocritical when it comes to Biden’s documents versus Trump’s is also effective.”

Tweet from Jesse Ferguson

“From the new NBC poll..

Americans think GOP will do too much investigations.

TOO MUCH: 55%

NOT ENOUGH: 11%

RIGHT BALANCE: 31%”

Tweet from MSNBC’s Kyle Griffin

“CNN poll: 73% of Americans say House Republicans are not focusing on the country’s top problems. Just 27% say the House GOP’s priorities are right.

The percentage of Americans who disapprove of congressional Republicans is 8 points higher than for Democrats (67% to 59%).”

Tweet from CNN

“Fewer than a third of Americans believe House Republican leaders are prioritizing the nation’s most important issues, a new CNN poll shows”.

Tweet from MSNBC

“78% of people in GOP Rep. George Santos’ district say he should resign, new poll finds. Santos dismissed the poll, saying he’s “not talking about a poll” that he “didn’t order.”
