WASHINGTON, DC – Statement from Facts First USA President David Brock on Kevin McCarthy continuing to lie about and try to hide the secret protocols of the corrupt bargain:
“The American people have the right to know the details of the corrupt bargain and McCarthy needs to stop his lying about it. The MAGA members McCarthy cut secret deals with for their vote for Speaker are publicly bragging about what they extorted. Other members of McCarthy’s caucus have said they have or have read copies of the secret agreements.
“McCarthy may only care about doing the bidding of Trump and MAGA extremists, but the American people have the right to know what Republicans are doing behind closed doors and it’s time for McCarthy to reveal the full details of the corrupt bargain.”
MCCARTHY IS TRYING TO HIDE THE DETAILS OF THE CORRUPT BARGAIN
Kevin McCarthy is starting his term as Speaker with backroom deals and outright lies stemming from his corrupt bargain with MAGA members to seize power. As part of that deal, Punchbowl News reported Monday the existence of a “3 page secret addendum” listing deals and terms McCarthy made with the far right Freedom Caucus. The addendum went unseen by many members, both Republican and Democrat. McCarthy has now denied the document exists, however Axios has confirmed Punchbowl News’ reports. Several Republican members and aides have confirmed seeing the addendum, including Richard Hudson and Ken Calvert. And currently there is also a list of McCarthy concessions “flying around K Street”,
MAGA IS PUBLICLY BRAGGING ABOUT IT
While McCarthy is holding the gavel, the exact details of the corrupt bargain are still trickling out and who knows what else is left to find. While McCarthy is trying to deny the details, MAGA members are proudly and publicly bragging about it! Matt Gaetz, for example, in a tweet claimed McCarthy’s promise to release Jan. 6th security footage is his and 19 other “patriots” doing. While Republican leadership lied that no committee seats were a part of the concessions, multiple Members including Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), said otherwise.
These secret corrupt bargains have caused some Republican members, including Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) and Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.), to press for transparency. Despite the clear discomfort of his own party, McCarthy will not commit to revealing the side deals he made in his bargaining for the speakership.
MCCARTHY HAS A HISTORY OF LYING TO APPEASE MAGE
Of course, McCarthy has lied to his colleagues and this country before. When the New York Times reported McCarthy told Republican leadership he would call Trump and urge him to resign after the January 6th attack on the Capitol, McCarthy called the report “totally false and wrong.” However, the Times released an audio recording proving McCarthy had said just that and then lied.
