From McCarthy’s Corrupt Bargain to the Insurrection Protection Committee, House Republicans deserve five “F’s” for their performance in Congress this week:

1) House Speaker Kevin McCarthy continues to rack up debts on his corrupt bargain. He essentially copied and pasted the far-right House Freedom Caucus debt ceiling plan into legislation, according to Rep. Matt Gaetz. After successfully extracting another concession from McCarthy, Gaetz still voted against the Default on America Act.

2) McCarthy’s corrupt bargain continues to embolden MAGA House Republicans. This week, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene said American Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten wasn’t a real mom because she is a stepmom and not a “biological mother.” Greene’s comment comes after McCarthy backed her last week when she was punished for attacking another witness during a committee hearing.

3) Speaking of MAGA, former President Trump thinks House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan is doing a great job of using his authority to protect him. Trump said that unlike former President Richard Nixon, who resigned in disgrace, Trump has the “great Jim Jordan” to support him.

4) It’s not just Trump, Jim Jordan is finally getting the praise he’s been looking for…from a Proud Boy. The Insurrection Protection Committee has done such a good job that the former leader of the Proud Boys, who is facing charges of seditious conspiracy related to January 6th, praised Jordan and said Jordan should call January 6th defendants to testify to his Weaponization subcommittee.

5) Finally, House Republicans’ hearings this week showed just how out of touch they are with Americans. Republicans attempted to hold a hearing about children and the border while in another room they prioritized guns over safety. True to form, they also gave a platform to a witness who works for a designated hate group and a witness with ties to a bad faith actor.
