WASHINGTON, DC – Statement from Facts First USA President David Brock following McCarthy losing the first ballot vote for Speaker:
“No matter how many more ballots McCarthy loses, the corrupt bargain he has already unleashed with MAGA extremists like Jordan, Comer, and Marjorie Taylor Greene has won. The only question left is will McCarthy or someone else finish the job by cutting enough secret deals to get to 218.
“Regardless of who ends up holding the Speaker’s gavel, MAGA extremists will be wielding the real power and the only agenda will be endless conspiracy theory investigations into people’s private lives instead of any action on inflation, gas prices, etc. that they campaigned on.
“Whenever a final candidate stumbles into the Speakership, it is absolutely imperative that the American people get transparency into what corrupt bargains were struck to gain power. It is clear that any coming investigations or impeachments from the Republican caucus are already irreparably tainted by backroom dealing with the MAGA extremists who want to undermine democracy.
