Instead of helping his own constituents, Rep. Jim Jordan is staging a field hearing in New York City as part of his effort to interfere in an ongoing criminal investigation against Trump. Jordan admitted just last week that he has no interest in governing, “I didn’t come to Congress to make more laws…My goal is not to pass a bunch of bills.” That’s fitting considering he hasn’t authored a single bill that became law since entering Congress in 2007 and was ranked 217 out of 222 Republicans by the Center for Legislative Effectiveness. If he was really concerned about finding legislative solutions to address crime rates he should start with his own district, where Washington Post Fact Checker concluded, “when crime numbers are adjusted for population, in many cases Mansfield does not fare well in comparison to Manhattan.”
Jordan’s decision to stage a hearing in New York City just two weeks after a grand jury indicted Trump on 34 felony counts of falsifying business records demonstrates what lengths House Republicans will go to protect Trump. Washington Examiner even wrote the effort was “a way to undercut the work of [Bragg]” with the goal to “erode his credibility as he prosecutes former President Donald Trump on a number of criminal charges.” On March 18th, House Speaker McCarthy directed committees to immediately investigate New York District Attorney Alvin Bragg. Reps. Jordan, James Comer, and Bryan Steil sent a letter to DA Bragg accusing him of attempting to interfere in the 2024 election. Multiple sources have already confirmed Jordan regularly speaks with Trump, whose counsel also directed him to investigate DA Bragg. Jordan’s intentions to use his committees to help Trump were made clear in August 2022, when he told a CPAC audience that the investigations would frame the 2024 election and they would “make sure [Trump] wins.”

Even before the indictment was unsealed, Jordan called it “outrageous” and “ridiculous.” After it was unsealed, he dismissed 34 counts of business fraud as a “campaign finance violation.” He also argued Trump should be considered above the law because he’s a 2024 presidential candidate and alleged it was election interference. Not only is Jordan wasting taxpayer money on this field trip, but according to legal analyst Glenn Kirschner, Jordan’s threat to investigate Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg could violate New York’s law against “obstructing governmental administration.”
To top off his insurrection protection stunt, Jordan is relying on witnesses who are political operatives and regular right-wing media contributors who have spread conspiracy theories about the 2020 election and January 6th on social media.
- Jennifer Harrison runs Victims Rights NY PAC, which describes its mission as a “battleground of good vs evil fighting against George Soros and his puppet candidates who want a complete breakdown of society.” The PAC has given more than $5,000 to NY GOP political candidates and committees. Harrison also touts her work advising political candidates and that she regularly appears on Fox News and other right-wing media outlets. With her Twitter account, Harrison spread conspiracy theories that the 2020 presidential election was stolen, defending Trump’s baseless allegations of widespread voter fraud. On December 29, 2020, Harrison echoed Trump’s false claim that the 2020 election was stolen and said “You are so right Mr. President! We are at war – we need warriors willing to take a stand.” Harrison argued extremist groups like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers were not at fault for January 6th. She also parroted false conspiracy theories that antifa and not Trump supporters instigated the attack on the Capitol, claiming she didn’t see any violence from Trump supporters and “Trump supporters don’t wear goggles, masks and helmets or clash with police.”
- Madeline Brame appeared in a mailer supporting 2022 NY GOP gubernatorial candidate Lee Zeldin. During the 2022 election she also appeared in a digital video for the Nassau County GOP attacking Governor Kathy Hochul. She is a regular contributor on Fox News and the state director of the NY Chapter of the Blexit Foundation, an organization run by right-wing conspiracy theorist and media personality Candace Owens. Like Harrison, Brame also spread conspiracy theories about January 6th on her social media. In response to photos of insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol she wrote “This all looks ‘staged’ to me” and agreed with a comment that the footage “looks staged.” She suggested Members of Congress were cowards for hiding from the insurrectionists and downplayed the events of January 6th. She defended Kanye West even after he went on anti-Semitic rants and praised Nazis. She told a state senator that threats of sexual violence would change her mind on prison reform and called Rep Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez a “bitch” for fighting for abortion rights. She also posted several times on social media suggesting undocumented immigrants are criminals and stealing jobs.
