“Comer’s sham immigration hearing – and the nearly identical one Jordan jumped ahead of Comer to hold last week – are just the first dangerous manifestations of McCarthy’s corrupt bargain to become Speaker. McCarthy sold the legitimate oversight process to MAGA Republicans as a platform for their extremism; everything from their anti-immigrant hate-filled agenda to the backroom-handshake decision to impeach Secretary Mayorkas over a policy disagreement.
“Americans of all political stripes agree our immigration system is broken. Congress’s job is to fix it, but instead of doing the job taxpayers pay them to do and debating policy and working through the legislative process in good faith, MAGA Republicans are spreading known disinformation and abusing the impeachment process to illegitimately remove a duly appointed Administration official. Articles of impeachment are reserved for High Crimes and Misdemeanors.
“Joe Biden and Donald Trump campaigned on very different views of how to handle immigration and the American people chose Biden. MAGA Representative Biggs tried to overturn the election joining illegitimate lawsuits, pushing legislatures to ignore the people’s will, and played a leading role in the efforts that led to the January 6th violent and deadly attack on the Capitol. Knowing he had acted treasonously, Biggs asked for a pardon from Trump.
“Biggs’s introduction of articles of impeachment against Secretary Mayorkas is a MAGA Coup 2.0. MAGA Republicans are weaponizing the power Speaker McCarthy gave them as part of the corrupt bargain to again try and overturn the public’s will like they did on January 6th. And it is the height of hypocrisy for Rep. Biggs who asked for a Trump insurrection pardon and refused to comply with a congressional subpoena to accuse Sec. Biggs Falsely Claimed Mayorkas Was “Encouraging Aliens To Enter Our Country Illegally” And Purposefully Releasing Covid-19 Positive Migrants Into American Communities. “Biggs, when he was chairman of the conservative House Freedom Caucus, introduced articles of impeachment against Mayorkas in August 2021, saying in a statement at the time that Mayorkas was ‘a threat to the sovereignty and security of our nation.’ Biggs falsely said that Mayorkas was ‘encouraging aliens to enter our country illegally’ and that DHS was ‘systematically releasing COVID-19 positive aliens into our communities.’ His effort did not advance in the Democratic-controlled House.” [NBC News, 2/1/23]
